From Brisbane to the World: Australian EV Engineering Without Borders
Independent Engineering | International Installer Network | Battery Technology
An electric vehicle developed in Japan, driven in Europe and ageing in Australia may eventually require the same thing: engineering expertise that extends beyond the manufacturer's original specifications.
Since completing his first Suzuki Swift electric conversion in Brisbane in 2007, Graeme Manietta has developed Oz Electric Vehicles into a specialist operation encompassing EV conversions, battery upgrades, electronic integration and practical engineering education.
What began in a local workshop now has an international dimension, with Oz Electric Vehicles listing approved installers across Australia, New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, mainland Europe, Chile and the Caribbean.
Engineering That Travels
Developing an EV battery upgrade is one challenge. Making the technology accessible to owners outside the originating workshop introduces another.
Oz Electric Vehicles develops battery upgrade solutions involving pack architecture, Battery Management Systems (BMS), Battery Control Units (BCU) and CAN bus communication. This technical integration is particularly important when adapting modern battery technology to older production vehicles.
The company's approved installer network provides customers with access to businesses able to source and install Oz Electric Vehicles upgrades in their respective regions.
It represents an important opportunity for specialist Australian engineering: developing knowledge and solutions locally while supporting practical application internationally.
Independent Thinking, International Application
The global transition to electric transport has created an industry beyond vehicle manufacturing. Existing EVs require maintenance, battery replacement, specialist diagnostics and, increasingly, technological upgrades.
Owners of early Nissan Leafs, Mitsubishi i-MiEVs and other ageing electric vehicles are not necessarily looking for another new car. Many simply want their existing vehicle to remain useful, with a driving range that meets modern expectations.
Independent engineering provides another pathway.
For Graeme, the experience accumulated through over two decades of conversions, battery development and electronics has created opportunities to share practical solutions with other specialists rather than confining that knowledge to a single workshop.
Australian Expertise Has a Place in the World
Oz Electric Vehicles demonstrates how a specialist Australian business can participate in an international industry through original development, technical knowledge and a network of installers.
As electric vehicles age across different markets, the ability to modernise existing platforms becomes an increasingly relevant engineering discipline.
The future of Australia's EV industry need not be limited to importing and selling finished vehicles. There is also value in the systems we design, the technical problems we solve and the knowledge we develop independently.
Good engineering may begin in a workshop. Its usefulness should not end at the workshop door.
